Interview with Jonathan Vercamer

"Once you cross the threshold, it feels more natural."

This is Jonathan:

Jonathan Vercamer came to Inksane to complement his sleeve by guest artist Dmitry Khmarsky. Jonathan is a good-hearted man with a career as a traffic controller at Infrabel. Our 32-year-old happy single has a passion for metal music. In fact, in his spare time he lives it up on a rough bass guitar and plays video games. However, he is not active in a music band. The duty of tracks can call at any time, and then he must be ready at all times. Mind you, there is a common thread in everything he does: Nordic mythology. For 10 years he has studied the topic and been inspired by its fascinating stories. He finds signs of it in gaming, music, at work... His love is even so great that he has devoted his entire right arm to it.

Love of music vs. love of tattoos

The introduction gave away that Jonathan's heart is pounding for metal music. As such, he loves to travel the world for it. Jonathan goes where the music leads him: from lush festivals to underground beats. Unfortunately, he also realizes that his love for tattoos may be just as great, and that neither comes without a cost. Therefore, he decided to focus entirely on tattoos in 2024, only to go all out on his music next year. For example, he has already planned to go see the band "Bullet for My Valentine" and "Avatar The Last Airbender in concert. Also, his favorite band is going on tour soon, so he will be away from home for a month to accompany them.

Nordic mythology

Jonathan sometimes catches himself watching hours of YouTube videos about Nordic mythology. "I can sometimes lose myself so much in those videos." In particular, he finds the symbolism of the god Odin and his ravens most fascinating. For Odin is the chief god of Nordic mythology, and more specifically of knowledge, wisdom, battle, war, the afterlife, magic, medicine and runic writing. He is accompanied by his two ravens: Huginn (the thought) and Muninn (the memory). His two companions he sends out to gather information and learn more about his "mortals.

First Thor, then Odin

Jonathan's sleeve began back in February with the god Thor. This is the strongest among the gods, more specifically the thunder god. In addition, he is also the protector of both gods and humans. Although the tattoo of Thor was already an impressive achievement, Jonathan wanted more. The addition of the sleeve will be completely outsourced to Odin with his ravens. "Odin is the chief god of Norse Mythology, so he had to be included anyway."

Curious about Khmarsky

Jonathan chose our guest artist Dmitry Khmarsky to do the job. The first time he heard about Dmitry was at work. A colleague showed him his latest tattoo and he immediately fell in love. "I asked him who had done that and where I could see other works of his," he said. In the process, Dmitry's Instagram page created an even better impression. Through his colleague, Jonathan was able to view the tattoos "in real life. "That's even more convincing. Online photos can often be edited, that's why I thought it was great that I could see those tattoos in real life."

Getting to know Inksane

Before Jonathan got tattooed by Dmitry Khmarsky, he had never heard of Inksane. So it was really through the artist that he came to us. "I live in Ghent myself, so for me it was ideal to come to Roeselare. In the end, it's not that far". Jonathan testifies that he was helped well from the beginning. "I was immediately given a form to fill out all the requirements and if I had any questions I was allowed to ask them right away. I actually wanted to get started on it as soon as possible, and that was possible. Khmarsky was very flexible in his schedule".

Confidence in the artist

The beautiful works he had seen from his colleague, along with the convincing Instagram photos made Jonathan able to give his full trust to Dmitry. "I said to him: do it, you know best what fits best and how the composition is put together." Dmitry had tattooed Thor many times in the past, so Jonathan could sleep on both his ears. "I also know that he paints, so I fully trust Dmitry's creative mind." The design also got an immediate "free pass. Khmarsky got the green light with his design and Jonathan couldn't wait to get started on it.

No pain

"I have no pain at all. With Thor's tattoo, I even dozed off for an hour". It is abundantly clear that tattoos are neither a mental nor physical barrier for Jonathan. But you should know, dear reader, that Jonathan comes straight to the shop after a heavy night shift. In his case, getting a tattoo can best be described as a 'zen moment'. Therefore, the arm is not such a sensitive place to get a tattoo. Still, the last half hour does begin to peak. "After about 6 hours of lying still with that needle, it may stop then," he laughed.

Not only arm, but also other arm and legs

Jonathan certainly doesn't plan to stop after this sleeve. "I definitely want more tattoos with the same artist." However, he is determined that the other body parts will be different themes. For example, his left arm will be all video game themed and his leg will be in that of the famous Lord of The Rings series. "I prefer the tattoos on the same body parts to match, then there is a cohesive whole," he said. Getting tattoos in general was a barrier at first, but after that he had no problem with it. "In the long run, it feels very natural and before you know it, you're planning all over your body." Once the step was taken, there was no stopping Jonathan.

Surroundings

"At work, almost all of us are tattooed." So Jonathan is not at all bothered by negative comments. On the contrary, colleagues inspire each other. They like to exchange design ideas so they can constantly get new and original tattoos. "At work, tattoos are not taboo at all, we actually enjoy looking at each other's works."

Why is Inksane the go-to for a successful tattoo?

Everyone here is super friendly! Also, the service is really up and running. I was surprised that there are really so many different styles offered from different artists. For example, if you want something Asian, something feminine... There is something for everyone. Furthermore, I was impressed by the size of the shop. When you enter, the shop doesn't seem very spacious, but as you go along, nooks and crannies are added exactly all the time.
